Qimen Dunjia is divided into Yin Dun and Yang Dun:
Yang Dun (Positive Escape)
- Time: From Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice (11th to 5th lunar month)
- Characteristics: Moves clockwise, from Palace 1 to Palace 9
- Symbolism: Rising Yang energy, growth of all things
Yin Dun
- Time: After Summer Solstice until before Winter Solstice (6th to 10th lunar month)
- Characteristics: Retrograde, from the Nine Palaces to the One Palace
- Symbolism: Yin energy descends, all things are stored
